iOS 16 and watchOS 9 Coming September 12 (Update: Release Candidate Available for Developers)

Today's Apple event is now over - and the iPhone 14, the Apple Watch Series 8, the Apple Watch Ultra as well as the AirPods of the second generation are presented. However, many users are more interested in a topic that was not addressed directly at the Apple event: when will iOS 16 and watchOS 9 be released?

The first new iPhone models are due to ship on September 16 – and Apple usually releases the final version of iOS a few days beforehand. This time Apple seems to have pushed this date forward a bit, because iOS 16 and watchOS 9 will be released in the final version for all users next Monday, September 12th.

New features
iOS 16 brings some new features: For example, the lock screen can finally be supplemented with additional information in the form of widgets. In addition, texts written via messages can be edited afterwards - even if they have already been sent. Apple has also revised the Home app and the password replacement "Passkey" is intended to make passwords superfluous - but it will probably be some time before most services are included.

If you want to install iOS 16, you need at least an iPhone 8, 8 Plus or X. The iPhone 6S and 7 are no longer supported. Apple Watch requires at least an Apple Watch Series 4 or Apple Watch SE to install watchOS 9. The Apple Watch Series 3, which Apple was still offering in the Apple Online Store a few days ago, is no longer supported by watchOS 9.

Switch directly?
Many users ask themselves whether they should switch directly to the new versions. If you would like to use one of the new features, you should not normally expect any major difficulties. The public beta tests have eliminated most of the major vulnerabilities and hardly any problems are to be expected for the vast majority of users. However, if you want to be on the safe side, you should wait until the first bug fix updates, which are usually available shortly after they are released.

Update: Release Candidate/Golden Master now available
Apple has now made the Release Candidates / Golden Master versions of iOS 16 and watchOS 9 available for download via the Apple Developer Connection for members of Apple's developer program. Most of these versions also appear in Apple's Public Beta Program quite soon. Also, tvOS 16 is available for download as a Release Candidate - this means that Apple will most likely also release tvOS 16 on September 12th.
